A Childhood at Digby Pines

A Conversation with Eleanor Nixon

From February of 2020

Eleanor Nixon, a 92-year-old resident of Digby, Nova Scotia, recently shared her fascinating childhood experiences growing up at the Digby Pines Hotel. From building forts on the golf course to caddying for Babe Ruth, Eleanor's memories are filled with joy and adventure.

Eleanor's father was hired by the Canadian Pacific Railway to build the Digby Pines Golf Course. She spent countless hours exploring the course and helping her father with his work. Eleanor even had her own horse, Daisy, which she kept stabled at the Pines.

One of Eleanor's most memorable experiences was when a naval officer from a nearby submarine visited the Pines and was injured. The navy officers invited Eleanor and her family to have dinner on the submarine as a thank you.

Eleanor's stories offer a glimpse into the history of Digby Pines and the unique experiences that can come from growing up in such a special place.
